hooray! heron started classes at her new montessori preschool today! a new school just opened up down the road from us--maria's place montessori (affiliated with montessori of alameda), and they still had openings two months into the school year. maria's place is bilingual english/spanish & offers financial aid so we can afford it (unlike most montessori schools). i love that heron will get the benefit of a montessori education in a culturally diverse environment. her teacher ms. patti is a lively grandmotherly mexican woman who's taught in portland montessori schools for the past twenty years. heron will be in school four mornings a week. the house was so quiet while she was at school today, & we sure missed her. but school seems like such a good fit for our social, eager-to-learn, spitfire little girl!

I am really curious about Montessori and I cant wait to hear about your experience. She looks delighted to go!
it's a huge transition for all of us! last year she attended preschool for two months, but somehow it (the sadness, the missing) didn't hit me as hard. now it's four mornings a week instead of two, & we're choosing it because we feel like it's good for HER, not ME. hopefully we'll have a better sense about whether it's the right thing for all of us by the end of the week!
deb, i'll let you know! two of my sisters-in-law started out in montessori, loved it, & it set them on a course for a lifelong love of learning. i actually checked out a mennonite montessori over in sunnyside. loved it, very affordable, too, but a bit too far from us.
