the gorge
outdoor adventures make for the best family sabbath. this sunday we explored the gorge near cascade locks, then drove on to hood river for some cherry-picking.

summer tour summary
we are back in portland now after an exciting, exhausting summertime tour. a bit of business + pleasure, tour + vacation. our travels took us from portland to charlotte, then atlanta, chattanooga, nashville, muncie, indy, bushnell (cornerstone festival), & chicago. all along the way we connected with friends*, old & new. i don't have pictures of even half the people or places we saw, but what i do have i've posted in the following entries to document the journey. (i posted instagrams along the way, but i've added my "real" photos to the mix since then)
the kids were perfect travelers, & never seemed to tire of the unending sea of new faces. nearly every place held kids their age to play with. heron, our eternal extrovert, was in heaven. even shepherd, a bit more introverted, seemed supernaturally charged by the daily unexpected of meeting strangers. if he ever tired of the crowds, he would steal away for some quiet time, then re-engage when he was ready.
and still, after such fun on the road, we are glad to be home. we've been here for a week now, trying to rest, even while piling headlong into the next project. yet, even in this busyness, we are happy to be just our family again, with our family routines, playtime, space, & moments of quiet.
thanks, friends along the way, who so graciously welcomed our family into yours. we treasure the summer days shared with you.

cornerstone
this was the last cornerstone festival ever, after 29 years of annual concerts on jpusa's illinois pig farm. josh has attended eleven of the past twelve years. his first years there, he'd set up an amp & a mic in front of the alliance world coffees tent, where all of us would volunteer for free tickets to the festival. the folks at jpusa (who live in downtown chicago in an intentional community for the rest of the year--the farm is their vacation spot) have become dear friends to us over the years. they couldn't afford to pay the musicians this final year, but it was such an honor to not only attend, but play at, the final event, in support of our friends. josh played the gallery stage the final night of cornerstone 2012 to a full & supportive crowd.
sometimes my iphone pictures are better than my real camera pictures. i barely took any pictures at cornerstone this year. it was too hot, & i was busy catching up with old friends & chasing the kids around. so. here are just three. top : the boys in women's sunglasses, which trace & josh are manly enough to sport with confidence. middle : me & joshy at the bushnell pool (it was >100F at the festival; we stayed away for a few hours with the kids & trace). bottom : josh's performance.

the dillers
our dear friends jason & kari happened to be back for the summer from southeast asia while we were in muncie. such a sweet & relaxing day having our growing families together. the girls spent hours together making art & finding adventure, shepherd was given his first slingshot, & josh tried his feet at takraw.
