a forest wedding

this week has been all about weddings for me, from designing & helping assemble my sister-in-law alli's wedding invitations, to making yarn mache lanterns for hannah & cameron's wedding.

hannah & cameron wanted everything in their wedding to be reclaimed or handmade, & they've hosted craft nights throughout the year in preparation.  it was beautiful to see our church community working together, supporting them so practically throughout this year as they prepared to join their lives together.  their wedding was yesterday, in the forest, on sauvie island, at the edge of open fields & pear & apple orchards.  it was magical & joyful.

(i love these pictures of heron on the hay bales.  you can tell she's been hard at play by the dirt on her face.  the sweet little dress she's wearing was hand-stitched by our friend kat, & given to heron at her baby shower.  you can't see it in these pictures, but it has embroidered yellow swallows all over it).

heron eagerly awaited the bride & groom's exit through two lines of people, but started sobbing when we pelted them with flowers!

ulysses

here is one of josh's latest songs, bound for the new album that should be out in early 2011.  this song is called "ulysses" & it makes me cry every time, which means it's one of my favorites.  the audience always gets really quiet once he starts singing it, so i think this must mean other people like it, & maybe you will like it, too.



it was filmed in new york city a few weeks ago as a one-take by nyu film students.  they shot this in their back yard, but the real song they brought him eastward to film was the song "words remain" on charango, filmed in a cathedral with an orchestra & on the subway.  they're still doing edits to juxtapose the two performances, but we'll share that video in a week or two.

rachel's baptism

our friend rachel got baptized today! here's her daughter avalon, watching from the shore.

watching this, josh & i were nostalgic for our own baptisms.  i was twenty-two, in muncie, indiana, about to leave for peru for three years.  it was dusk, & i was baptized in a horse trough as the moon & fireflies were just appearing.  my dear friend gala, josh's sister, was baptized with me (i hadn't met her brother yet).  a few years later, when josh was nineteen, about to head home for the summer after his first year of college, he was baptized in the white river in muncie.  guy pfanz, who later married us, baptized both of us.

congratulations, rachel!  we're so glad you're family!

cannon beach

we took mom to cannon beach while she was out here visiting.  it's just an hour and a half away--perfect for a day trip!  we left portland during naptime, & returned home at bedtime after a huge & yummy meal at a restaurant overlooking haystack rock.
