for a girl who once considered cloth to be her primary artistic medium, it has been almost soul-wrenching to live without a sewing machine for over a year. my janome sewed one-too-many teepees (one for heron, one for a friend's school auction), without enough maintenance, oiling, & needle changes by her owner, and last february, finally gave up the ghost. i have been loaned three machines over the past year+, but, wanting to spare the lives of friends' machines, have used them only occasionally. a new machine was meant to be my christmas present, but i couldn't settle on the perfect one until i met this little beauty last week. loyalties are changing--i love bernina! & i can't wait to sew some summer dresses for my sweet little girl.

Do you use patterns? I was given a sewing machine a while ago but have no idea how to use it. Wondering what the best way to go about it is--thoughts? :)

sometimes i use patterns & sometimes i don't ;)
i believe i started making up my own designs before i learned to read a pattern, but it is always a good thing to learn to read patterns from the get-go--you'll make fewer mistakes along the way!
i'd be happy to give you sewing + pattern-following lessons anytime! also, the store where i purchased my sewing machine, modern domestic, offers classes, though i don't see any general sewing/basics classes listed on their site right now. they are a good resource if there is something specific you want to learn how to make (a quilt, a blouse, kids' clothes, etc.) once you've learned the basics.
