we're here in chicago at the crown plaza hotel, having missed our connecting flight to portland last night. we were up until midnight because the kids were wired when we finally got to the hotel. so we ordered room service: bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin with sage butter, apple compote, flash saute of spinach, garlic mashed potatoes, and strawberry cheesecake for dessert. sheppy helped me with the apple compote, heron shared the cheesecake while she watched strawberry shortcake.
we were able to get a crib for shepherd, and heron slept in a big queen bed all by herself. i slid a chair up to each side of the bed to help her feel safe, and sheppy joined me in my cozy bed in the middle of the night. we awoke after a perfect night's sleep, and had a lovely breakfast together downstairs.

these kids have been such troopers! we already spent four unexpected hours in the charlotte airport, had a long day yesterday, & now we wait again today. we'll hopefully catch the 3:25 flight to pdx this afternoon, but this has been a fun little adventure with my babies!

we're supposed to drive 7 hours to redding, california, with josh tomorrow. hmm... not sure if that sounds good right now... (except for the being-with-josh-again part)

your pictures actually make it look like a quaint little detour! i'll be praying for smooth sailing the rest of the way home to portland.
