my daughter is a self-determined little thing. she wakes up every morning, unzips her footie pajamas, takes off her diaper, goes potty, and puts panties and a dress on before coming in to see if we're awake. she's two and a half, and this has been her morning ritual for months now.
every day, a dress. she'll rarely allow me to put pants on underneath, though homemade legwarmers are okay with her. my mom said i was like this, too, with dresses. but neither of us are (or were) girlie girls. we're tomboys all the way through. tomboys with dresses. so i'm starting to make heron lots of dresses. sometimes she'll choose to wear the same one every day for a week. this is one such dress, at the end of a week, stained with play, but i'm finally getting around to taking a picture of it. i tried to take pictures of it with heron in it. but she's going through a phase of not wanting to get her picture taken. (josh says it's not a phase, but the next few years of her life)
when i showed heron the fabric for her dress (that had once been curtains in her room), she said, "oh, mama! you're making me a ponyo dress!" i had no idea what this was, but then i saw it. the pattern of the fabric totally looks like the jellyfish from the miyazaki film ponyo which she (ponyo) rides up to the surface of the ocean. since this is her favorite movie, this is now her favorite dress. score!

this is beautiful! i love the stories you tell, mitchy. now that mae is walking, i am determined to make a lot more dresses/skirts and leggings since she no longer crawls into them and face plants :(

Before I finished reading the whole post, the military wife in me took over...as in, I re-read the title as a military-style acronym: the Put ON Your Own dress

thanks! the dress is part pattern + part inspiration from a dress my friend charity made for heron. i used the pattern to cut out the basic pieces, adjusting them to include shoulder buttons instead of a back zipper (a la charity). i avoid zippers at all costs!
jamie, are you jamie richter? i am trying to tell from the little thumbnail picture that shows up beside your comment. if so, wow! it's been something like 27 years! i like your military-style acronym!
