in june, josh & i flew to omaha, jumped in a silver corolla, & journeyed through the grasslands & badlands to the pine ridge reservation in south dakota. we were invited by a group from evansville, indiana, to join their team of relationship-building, rather than building-building, and prayer, on the sioux reservation. josh played two shows at a local cafe, owned by the beautiful belle & leon. it was a surprising time that almost reminded me of pucallpa, peru, with dust & noise & daytime firecrackers. we loved being a part of this trip that focused on prayer rather than a project, as eric, our host, had realized that programs had had little effect on the sioux nation, still one of the poorest counties in the country. our favorite memory was of daryl firethunder, who graciously spent two afternoons with me & josh, sharing his stories & his land with us. on the way home we drove through the badlands at midday, with a space music soundtrack, & hiked our little hearts out.
